Avid followers of Elba’s Instagram page know that the 43 year old Brit has been breaking a sweat and bulking up now that he has taken up kickboxing. Fans have been speculating that it could possibly be for the upcoming Thor movie or perhaps the new James Bond film (we are still crossing our fingers on that one), but it seems we finally have the official answer. On Tuesday, Elba announced his new profession along with a new docu-series, Idris Elba: Fighter. The series will follow a year in his kickboxing training journey across Britain, Cuba, Japan, South Africa and Thailand. The show will also include his first no-holds-barred competition against a seasoned brawler. “It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to fight professionally," said Elba in a statement. "Entering the ring to further test myself as a human being is a challenge I have been looking to take on for quite some time." Though not professionally, Elba spent much of his twenties training in kickboxing simply for recreational fitness. The limited series will extend the Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee’s relationship with Discovery Networks International following their collaboration on racing program No Limits. The three-part hourlong factual will see Elba undertake the physically and mentally demanding task of training to become a professional kickboxer. The series is set to premiere early 2017.
