Kamala Harris made a grand announcement on Martin Luther King Day that she was going to be running for president in 2020. An advocate for the Democratic people, Harris feels that a drastic change is needed from our current president, Donald Trump, and feels as if she is the changed needed.
For those unfamiliar with who Kamala Harris, she is a United State Senate for California and she’s served in that role since 2017. Prior to that she was the 32nd Attorney General of Carolina, and she served in that role from 2011 to 2017. Some can say, Harris is on the winning team by being a Democrat. With her announcement on this passing monday, she also dropped a small portion of her campaign video. “..the time has come to fight the injustices of the past 2 years of Trump.” Harris went on to tell current and future supporters to join her in “claiming our future”. “Justice, Decency, Equality, Freedom, Democracy. These aren’t just words. They’re in the values we as Americans cherish. And they’re all on the line now.”
Before the fame of being a senate and a attorney general, Harris was a prosecutors, and started this journey in Alameda County where she was trying crimes in sexual assault and homicides. Harris feels like because of her law history, this sets her apart from her female competitors, which are also United States senators. Her opponents are the following: Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Representative Tulsi Gabbard, Senator Elizabeth Warren.
“The future of our country depends on you and millions of others lifting our voices to fight for our American values..” she says in her video. “I’m running to lift those voices, to bring our voices together.” Though there is still a lot of time left until 2020, Harris and others have already started preparing.
