We all remember this iconic quote from the movie Friday and we all know this actor’s face, but did we really know John Witherspoon was going to leave us this soon? John Witherspoon, also known as “ Pops,” died October 29, 2019 at the age of 77. Here are a few little known facts about this talented and celebrated actor.

He was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1942 and was the first of 11 siblings. He worked as a model, but then fell in love with comedy in the 1960s. His television debut came in the 1970s when he was cast in supporting roles on hit shows like The Wayans Bros, Good Times, Barnaby Jones, and The Incredible Hulk. He appeared in movies such as: Friday, Little Man, House Party. Along with his television career, he made appearances in music videos for Goodie Mob, Jay-Z, and LL Cool J. He was also the voice of the grandpa on The Boondocks.

Along with his professional success, he was devoted to his personal life. He married Angela Robinson Witherspoon, who gave him two children. He remained married to her for 31 years, until his death. His family commented, ““It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family. We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal’, but he was a huge deal to us.”
