Beyonce just made history being the first Black Woman to Headline Coachella, a festival held in California. During her performance, she brought out Jay-Z, Solange, and even reunited with Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, her Destiny’s Child Bandmates. The singer’s Coachella Performance was specifically set to pay tribute to HBCU’s, from Marching bands, dance troupes and step teams.
After her recent performance at Coachella, Superstar Singer Beyonce is now donating 100,000 to four HBCUs. She announced the Homecoming Scholars Award Program for the 2018-2019 academic year through her BeyGOOD initiative. Ivy McGregor, the director of philanthropy and corporate relations at Parkwood Entertainment which contains BeyGood released a statement through Los Angeles Times, “We salute the rich legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We honor all institutions of higher learning for maintaining the culture and creating environments for optimal learning which expands dreams and the seas of possibilities for students.”
One student from Tuskegee University, Bethune-Cookman University, Xavier University of Louisiana and Wilberforce University, will each receive 25,000 of the scholarship money. In order to receive an award, applicants must have at least a 3.5 GPA. Each University will select it’s own finalists and winners, and each winner will be revealed this summer.
This is Beyonce’s second scholarship program. Last year she started the Formation Scholars Award Program to support creative and bold young woman studying creative arts, music, literature, or African-American studies at Berklee College of Music, Parsons School of Design, Howard University, and Spelman College. The program also celebrated the one- year anniversary of her “Lemonade” album. According to Huffington Post, the announcement for the Homecoming Scholars Program compared to the Coachella performance, saying the festival “put the spotlight on art and culture, mixing the ancient and the modern,” and was the “impetus to mark her second scholarship program.” BeyGOOD works throughout the year to improve, inspire, and uplift the nation through kindness and love.
