"Detroit" Hits Movie Theaters Today!

The nights of July 25 and 26th in 1967 were crucial times in the city of Detroit, Michigan. An incident occurred at the Algiers Motel that left three black teenagers dead and nine other; two white females and seven black males, badly beaten and humiliated. This was during the time of another racially charged event called the “12th Street Riot”.

The incident was incited by a riot task force that consisted of the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police and the Army National Guard, along with a private security guard. It’s said that there was a report that there was either snipers, a gunman or a group of gunmen had been seen near the hotel. One death was never explained, two deaths were attributed “justifiable homicide” and no one was convicted of assault, conspiracy, murder, or conspiracy to commit murder. No justice was really served because no one knows what really happened in that room or the aftermath that effect, until now.

The movie was released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the event. The film stars John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jason Mitchell, John Krasinski, and Anthony Mackie. The film premiered in limited theaters on July 25th, receiving critical acclaim and a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. With the state of the country and police brutality; this movie couldn’t have come at a better time. Definitely, make an effort to go see Detroit!
