The Importance of Meharry Medical College

Meharry Medical College, founded in Nashville, Tennessee in 1876 as the Medical Department of Central Tennessee College, was the first medical school in the South for African American Individuals This historically black medical school is dedicated to educating future physicians, dentists, researchers, and health policy experts.

The college was founded by five brothers by the names of Alexander, David, Hugh, Jesse, and Samuel. In 1876, the brothers funded the Department of College’s Medical Department, which evolved into what we now know as Meharry Medical College.

Today, Meharry is a medical school, dental school, and a graduate school and is home to the Robert Wood Johnson Center for Health Policy at Meharry. The school offers a variety of degrees, including Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.), Master of Science in Public Health (M.S.P.H.), Master of Health Sciences (M.H.S.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.).
