Almost a year later and Eric Garner's case has been announced settled for $5.9 million. On July 17, 2014 Eric Garner, 43, of Staten Island, NY was murdered by local officer Daniel Pantaleo by forcible chokehold. Garner was accused of suspiciously selling untaxed cigarettes on the streets, when Pantaleo attacked him and wrestled him to the ground choking him to death. This is when Garner began pleading, "I can't breathe!", through gasps of air. His family grew furious, demanding justice especially after the grand jury collectively voted to not have Pantaleo indicted for his murder.

Esaw Garner, Eric's widow, his mother and other family members felt that justice needed to be prevailed for her late husband and wanted to file a lawsuit against the city of New York. The original settlement price was at $75 million. Of course, the city denied that claim and offered a counter settlement for $5 million. Esaw denied it. Finally, the settlement was announced on Monday for the final $5.9 million, which was urged by Scott Stringer, the comptroller who elected to negotiate the settlement to avoid paying legal fees from the anticipated lawsuit he was gonna be slapped with!
