2016 NAACP Image Award Nominations (Full List Included)

The nominations for the 47th annual NAACP Image Awards were announced on Tuesday. The NAACP Image Awards celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in TV, music, literature, and film and honors individuals and groups that promote social justice through creative endeavors. Nominations were announced in the categories of motion pictures, TV, recording and literature. Starting with the movie categories, it seems that Creed, the Rocky spinoff, is in the lead with 6 noms. Universal’s Straight Outta Compton is next up with 5 noms. Then there’s Netflix’s first original feature film, Beast of No Nation, tying with Amazon’s first feature film, Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq , with 4 noms. Creed, Compton, and Beasts will all face off for outstanding motion picture, alongside Sony’s Concussion (which scored 3 noms itself) and Open Road’s Dope. On the TV side, Fox drama Empire scored a leading 12 nominations, the most for any TV series, followed by ABC comedy Black-ish with 10. ABC led all networks with a total of 28 nominations, including 5 each for How to Get Away with Murder and American Crime and 4 for Scandal. Meanwhile, BET received 13, including 4 each for Being Mary Jane and Book of Negroes. HBO’s Bessie earned 5 nominations, while Netflix’s TV series collected numerous with Orange Is the New Black’s 4 and Aziz Ansari’s Master of None with 2. NBC’s recently aired live musical, The Wiz Live!, landed 2 noms, as did Comedy Central’s The Daily Show With Trevor Noah and The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore.
