By now everyone is familiar with the phrase “The Real MVP”, made famous by Kevin himself. Most people’s knowledge of it however comes from the subsequent memes, gifs, and hashtags instead of the heartfelt moment that it stemmed from. The touching moment was during a 2014 news conference where Durant was announced NBA’s Most Valuable Player. He emotionally thanked his friends, family, and his mother, Wanda Pratt; to whom he dedicated a 26-mintue monologue that included the famous words: “You sacrificed for us…You’re the real MVP.” Two years following that moving moment it has been revealed that Lifetime network is set to air a television movie inspired by the speech and Pratt’s life as a single parent. The movie is titled You’re the Real MVP: The Wanda Pratt Story and will depicts Pratt and her boys’ journey as a family trying to escape poverty on the outskirts of Washington D.C. is being directed by former music and culture critc, Nelson George and will be produced by Queen Latifah and her production company, Flavor Unit. Pratt has of course been very hands on with the entire process. She helped pick the final actors and actresses that would portray her, her sons Tony and Kevin, and her mother which in the end went to Actress Cassandra Freeman (Inside Man, Single Ladies), newcomers Daniel Bellomy and Nic Few, and actress Pauletta Washington (Wilma, Beloved). It’s also reported that Rent’s Tracie Thomas and Real Husbands of Hollywood’s Demarius Mack will also be appearing as Wanda’s best friend and as a young Tony respectively. The movie is written by Yolonda Lawrence (Witches Of East End) and Ligiah Villalobos (Ed) but, Pratt was also a part of the script writing process and even visited the set. “I saw a few of the scenes acted out,” she says, “which was very emotional for me.” You’re the Real MVP: The Wanda Pratt Story is set to premiere on Mother’s Day, Sunday May 8 on Lifetime at 8 pm ET.
