Powerpuff Girls: The Power of Four

For almost two decades, The Powerpuff Girls have been the “sugar, spice, and everything nice” in many childhood memories. The iconic cartoon trio started their heroic adventures in 1998 on their first televised episode. The original series ended in 2005, but Cartoon Network was not finished with these young superheroes. In 2016, The Powerpuff Girls rebooted for the new generation. The show is still popular enough for the show to pick up a season 2 and now they will take an even newer direction by adding a fourth member to the team.

Although the unveiling of the fourth Powerpuff girl was supposed to be kept underwraps, a Russian promo, featuring the new character was spotted and leaked.

On Thursday night, Toya Delazey announced that she would be the newest addition to the beloved trio, saying “AND JUST LIKE THAT, I BECAME A POWERPUFF GIRL. Much love for my Cartoon Network for trusting me with this epic job. #lifegoals.” Delazey collaborated with Turner Africa’s Cartoon Network in 2016 to create a South African version of The Powerpuff Girls theme song. Now, she will get to stand right alongside Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup.

The Senior Vice President at Turner Broadcasting in Southern Europe and Africa Jaime Ondarza said in a statement, “Toya is definitely a perfect fit as the fourth Powerpuff Girl. She is confident, bubbly and quirky, all the values that we are familiar with, love and appreciate. We have a lot of surprises up our sleeves.” Despite not knowing her name yet, we do know the new Powerpuff girl will be Black, have long blue hair, wear the color purple, and she appears to stand taller than the other three. The addition of a Black Powerpuff girl is very powerful in itself. This representation should boost their ratings and allow young Black girls worldwide to relate to the new character’s confidence, quirkiness, and other attributes that will be later revealed in the show. Entertainment Weekly reported that the fourth Powerpuff Girl will be revealed during the premiere of a five-part movie called The Powerpuff Girls: Power of Four, airing on Cartoon Network September 17 at 5:30pm ET.
