Issa Rae is producing a “Set It Off” Remake

Actress and co–creator Issa Rae from HBO’s popular television show Insecure is taking a seat in the production chair.

Issa Rae has announced that she will be producing a remake of the popular 1996 drama “Set It Off” that starred Jada Pickett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica Fox, and Kimberly Elise.

Directed by Felix Gary, the original film told the story of four friends that rob banks in order to help with their financial struggles. Rae is producing the remake with Montreal McKay through her production company “Issa Rae Productions”, reported the Variety. Syreeta Singleton and Nina Gloster are also working alongside Rae to write the script.

After Jada Pinkett Smith recently shut down rumors about a “Set It Off Sequel” in an interview, fans were surprised to hear about its remake.

“Absolutely not”, Jada responded when asked about there being a “Set It Off” sequel. “I don’t know why people keep thinking that... I know we want the original cast, so whether they decide to do like an extension of it or recast it in some way, I personally think that’s something you leave alone”, Jada told WhereistheBuzz TV.

Even the original cast members were shocked themselves when they heard the announcement.

In early July, Vivica Fox interviewed on Sway’s Universe and expressed her feelings toward a “Set It Off” reboot.

“It’s a classic... You can do something else new, but you should leave it alone. What? She’s going to bring us back with a Quija board?”

Here’s what some fans of the original movie had to say about the remake.

There has not been a release date for the remake yet.
