RUMOR PATROL: Did The Get Down Just Get Cancelled?!

The Get Down is a musical homage to the birth of hip hop centering on a ragtag group of teenagers growing up in the Bronx in the late 1970s. With the creativity and authenticity showcased by the multi-talented Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsby) and a team of collaborators -- Oscar-winner Catherine Martin, legendary MC Nas, Grandmaster Flash, Pulitzer-winning playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, and hip-hop historian Nelson George, the show has garnered positive buzz and reviews from critics and viewers alike. The first half of season one (6 episodes) debuted last month and the cast and crew have already began to work on the second half. However, two days ago it was reported that the Netflix series had got its walking papers and the internet has been going crazy ever since. The main reason for the ALLEGED cancellation was the cost. It reportedly caused $120 million to produce, but the ratings did not match the budget. It got about 3.2 million viewers in a month. Other Netflix originals managed to gain an average of 8-15 million viewers. Well the good news is IT’S JUST A RUMOR! Netflix hasn’t yet released an official statement but one of the producers, Nelson George, did on his Facebook (See Below). The show’s creators have even been going on record discussing plans for Season 2 where we can look forward to seeing the magic of the 80’s – the Prince and MJ era. According to Master Herald, “The story of Ezekiel and Shaolin Fantastic will progress organically as they move into the 80s. Mylene’s story will deal with the end of the disco era and how it affects her whole life in The Get Down Season 2.” Now we can all breathe a sigh of relief.
