#BlackGirlMagic: Artist Gives Disney Princesses A Plus-Sized Makeover!

A New York fashion illustrator and artist by the name of Jonquel Norwood recently published an amazing collection of reimagined Disney princess. Each of the women dawn more modern outfits and more importantly they each embody body positivity! The body positive advocate decided to start the series, which she has called Magic Has No Size, after she herself had been fat shamed. “I was body shamed most of my life and... like most, I believed I had to slim down in order to truly be a member of society,” she told Bustle.

All the princesses have different styles, with their outfits inspired by real life designer pieces. “[I] created [these designs] to celebrate the 67 percent of women who are unrepresented in today’s media,” she said in a statement. “All of the princesses are wearing clothing inspired by actual plus size brands, in an effort to draw attention to those who have dedicated their brands to dressing curvy women…like Snow White, who is sporting a Layne Bryan bomber jacket and Society+ inspired cage top. Or Ariel’s dress that was directly inspired by a Courtney Noelle dress.”

It has statistically been proven that many young girls fall victim of what is known as the Disney Princess Effect, which can simply be described as the psychological effect on a growing girl’s self-esteem due to the glorified images of unrealistic shapes of princesses. Norwood says that in the end she just wanted to 'do her part' and help young girls feel more represented when looking at images of the princesses. She is reportedly still developing the series and may even include villans! The Divah Filez salute you Ms. Norwood and on a scale of 1-10 this pics are a 100! Slay girl!
